Awesome things I found while wandering around the lower east side and Soho, some are new and some are oldies but definitely goodies. I think it’s really interesting to consider how artists choose to leave their marks and how they integrate their work into the existing landscape. Just like in a gallery, some artists have messages while others want to create visual impact. A lot of the time this work is done in secret, but New York is great at bringing these works to the forefront by commissioning public works of art and giving them prime real estate and lots of space (“lots of space” is a relative term to New Yorkers). The piece below, done by artist Maya Hayuk, is the latest of a series on the “Bowery Mural Wall” owned by Goldman Properties. The aim of the project is to present the top contemporary artists from all over the world and to highlight artists that work primarily or originally on the streets. The wall is in homage to artist Keith Haring who made it famous in the 1970’s by painting a mural of his own.
